Stony Brook Village Scarecrow Build

Thank you for your interest in volunteering to build our Scarecrow for the 2025 Stony Brook Village Scarecrow Contest! Please read ALL of the following information carefully, thank you!

Organized by the The Ward Melville Heritage Organization, this year will mark the 35th Annual Scarecrow Content in Stony Brook Village.  Individuals and groups from Three Village build scarecrows, which are displayed in the Village for the month of October.  Visitors to the Village have the opportunity to vote for their favorite scarecrow during the month of October.  Winning Scarecrows get prizes!

Dedicated and Artistically Inclined Teen and Tween Volunteers are needed to create the Library’s Scarecrow!

For Teen/Tween Volunteers, there will be three REQUIRED meetings for this project.  You MUST be able to attend ALL THREE MEETINGS to volunteer for this project.  The meetings are as follows:

Tuesday September 16, 2025 – 6:00-7:00pm

Wednesday September 17, 2025 – 6:00-7:00pm

Thursday September 18, 2025 – 6:00-7:00pm

In addition to the meetings, you will be assigned a week to “Adopt” the Scarecrow in the Stony Brook Village.  During your week, you will be in charge of checking on the scarecrow at least 3 times during the week, and making sure it is in good condition.  Weather can do a number on the Scarecrow; in years past we’ve even experienced hurricanes while the scarecrow is displayed.  You will be provided with some basic repair tools, in case the Scarecrow needs a little TLC.

In total, you will earn 7 hours of community service credit for participating in all three meetings, and adopting the Scarecrow for a week.

   Please triple check your schedule, and then email the Teen & Tween Services Department Head Librarian, Emily Ostrander, to express your interest in volunteering for the Scarecrow Build: emily@emmaclark.org.  Within your email please state your name and grade, and answer these 3 questions:

  1. Have you participated in creating the Library Scarecrow before?

  2. Do you participate in any art programs in school or as an extra curricular?

  3. What art formats/materials are you most skilled in?

We are looking for highly artistic volunteers who want to use their skills to craft the best scarecrow we can create! We will let you know by September 8th, 2025 if you have been chosen to participate in the Scarecrow Build.
